About DRA and How It Works

Turbulent flow is a common challenge for pipelines. Characterized by chaotic, swirling motions, turbulent flow is inefficient and results in greater pressure losses (i.e., energy losses) in pipelines, requiring operators to spend more money on electricity and fuel to power pump stations. Drag reducing agents (DRAs) address the challenge of turbulent flow. By reducing the frictional pressure losses (i.e., the drag) experienced by fluids in turbulent flow, DRAs help pipeline operators increase their revenue and meet their sustainability goals.

Drag reducing agents (DRA), also known as flow improvers, have been widely used by oil and gas pipelines across the world for over 40 years to reduce this frictional pressure loss. DRA, which consist of long-chain hydrocarbon polymers, offers a wide variety of benefits and can help your company optimize your pipeline systems.

Theory of Drag Reduction

When can DRA help?

DRA can help a variety of pipelines operating in a turbulent flow regime including:

  • Light to medium crude
  • Medium crude
  • Heavy Crude
  • Multiphase
  • Refined products
  • Natural Gas Liquids (NGL)

DRA can provide significant benefits to pipeline operators, including:

  • Increased flow
  • Removing constraints
  • Reducing pressure
  • Better managing energy
  • Improving operations without costly capital expenditures
  • Managing temperature
  • Improving sustainability
